Welcome to Spintle, an online game where you write add-on stories with your friends! We know, you're wondering "what's a friend?" That's harder to define, but we'll take a stab at explaining what "add-on story" means. In an add-on story, you and your friends take turns adding a sentence to a story. This can lead to all sorts of bizarre and hilarious stories!
After learning what "friend" means, get some of them together. Doesn't matter if you meet up virtually or in-person.
Now, someone has to create the story. They can go to spintle.com and click the Create Story link at the bottom. After they enter the name they want to go by and click the Create Story button, they will be in the Waiting Room! There will be a 4-letter code at the top of their screen, which they should give to all of you.
The rest of you can now go to spintle.com, enter a name you want to go by, the 4-letter code (or ask your friend to send you the story link), and click Join Story. You'll now be in the Waiting Room as well!
Once everyone is in, whoever created the story can press the Everyone I like is in! button.
This should take everyone to the Suggest Title page. Here, come up with a title you think is funny, profound, or dumb—anything, really. If you can't think of anything, then you can use the sparkly pineapple button to generate a title with A.I. for you. You only get 10 of these suggestions, so use them carefully! When you're satisfied with your title, press Suggest Title. Welcome back to the Waiting Room!
Once everyone has submitted a title, you'll all be directed to the Choose Title page. Here, you each get to vote for a title from those that you submitted! Choose the title you like best and press Choose Title. You'll find yourself back inside that Waiting Room you've grown to love so much.
After everyone chooses a title, you'll all finally be directed to the Story Game page! If you're playing in the default Compete mode, then you'll all submit lines and vote on the ones you like most. However, in the Collab mode, you'll each get a turn to write a line for the story. When it's your turn, type something in the text input box and press Write Line before time runs out (More on that in Rules below)! The sparkly pineapple button is there again, so you can generate a line using A.I. if you can't think of anything. Remember, you only get 10 of these suggestions, so use them carefully! You can click on a line to see when it was written and who wrote it!
Depending on the settings chosen by the story creator (more on that in Settings at the bottom of this page), you will have the opportunity to end the story on your turn instead of writing a line. To do this, press End Story. Everyone will be directed to The End page. After this, the story is over, no one can write another line, and your friends will hate you if you do this without asking them. The default settings also have a maximum amount of lines for the story, after which it ends. The story will also automatically end if all but one person leaves the story or after the last line is written if the story creator leaves while the line limit is enabled.
If you're playing in Compete mode, then the player who writes the most lines wins once the line limit is reached or the story ends. Additionally, in this mode only the story creator can end the story.
Spintle is not without some limits. There's rules to spice things up!
There are settings that the story creator can change. Here's a list of them with their possible values:
Other than these, Each player has a theme setting they can use to toggle dark mode and a streamer mode setting for hiding input and selections from a stream audience.
If a story has already started, you can still join the audience. You won't be able to write anything, but you will get to vote!
To join the audience, just try joining a story that's already started. You'll see a prompt for audience mode, where you can click "Join Audience" to join.
If you want to check on the score during the game, click the "Lines: " button at the top of the page.
The scoreboard ranks players based on how many lines they've contributed to the story. Players that have contributed the same number of lines will be shown in the same place.
